Welcome to Joppa Maple Grove District #38

Joppa High School hosted a Career Day on Friday April 25th, 2008. Several community members were able to attend and share with the students their knowledge and expertise. The participants in the 2008 Career Day were: Sgt. Kurtis Qualls, United States Air Force; Terry Riley, owner/appliance technician; Charity Frizzell, graphic designer; Chris Skates, chemistry supervisor from EEI; Kim Jones, LaFarge; Lou Derose, LaFarge; Jeff Wright, owner Wright’s Automotive; The Bear on the Air, from 93.3 WKYQ; Amy Antas, veterinarian from Meller-James Veterinary clinic; and Leslie Peters, attorney at law.
The participants were able to share with the Joppa freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors about various career opportunities, necessary education, and a realistic look at different types of careers. The participants had lots of good information and materials for the Joppa students. The Bear on the Air gave away some prizes, and Chris Skates did a chemistry demonstration with actors from the student body to demonstrate how water is made potable. LaFarge also was kind enough to donate gift certificates from the Office Depot to three college bound seniors. Ashley Smith won a $100 certificate; Rondell Smith won a $200 certificate; and Jessica Czachura won a $300 certificate.
Joppa High School would like to express their sincere gratitude toward all of the Career Day participants. Our students were able to gain valuable exposure to different career opportunities, as well as spend some time with outstanding community members. A supportive and involved community is imperative to the success of a school district. Joppa High School is thankful to be a part of such a community.

Maple Grove Parents and Teachers go "Turkey Trotting"

The
Turkey Trot is about over and parents and teachers had a great time. The
goal was to finish, and they did! The weather was perfect and it was
just a fun, fun day. Thanks to all who participated, encouraged the
group, and kept them accountable. You have no idea how motivating
"Did you run last night?" can be!
On the awards stage, the Walquist family had a family reunion! This
is an actual rundown of how everyone did: Lacy and Kathey finished
strong and earned a medal for the 5K Walk, Kendell finished first in age
group for 5K, Aric finished first place in age group for 5K, Grandma
finished first in age group for 5K, Grandpa finished fourth in age group
for 15k (eeek!), Andy finished first in 1 mile run, and Lex, Maddie, and
Briella ran their hearts out in a 1 mile fun run. Jodie finished 5K
in 33 minutes, Caleigh Evitts ran it in 30 minutes and placed in her age
group, and Jennifer Pegram finished in 36 minutes. She can now check
that "run a 5K" off of her life's "to-do list!" Thanks to everyone
again! Check out the other photos of the race by
